Authentic Maharashtrian Taste in Dallas- Vishnu Ji ki Rasoi

Authentic Maharashtrian Taste in Dallas- Vishnu Ji ki Rasoi

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Step into the shoes of a foody customer and just give a thought. What makes you happy and satisfied as a customer when you visit a restaurant. Taste of food, cheerful and pleasant ambiance, and quality service, isn’t it? If by and large, this is true, Vishnuji Ki Rasoi stands tall on these grounds. And Vishnuji Ki Rasoi in Dallas(Allen) has earned its reputation on all these fronts within a year of its birth. Indeed, an incredible journey and feat, especially during testing Covid times.

Hemant Kulkarni, who is now shouldering the responsibility of this incredible brand, has a lot of stories to share about his journey in this one year. Originally an IT guy, Hemant was always interested in doing some business apart from his regular IT job. An active member of Maharashtra Mandal since 2017-18 he was searching for the right opportunity. Meanwhile, he happened to visit the already running outlet of Vishnuji Ki Rasoi and got an immensely bad experience in terms of service. He communicated his resentment with the restaurant and even to Vishnu Manohar in Nagpur, India, the founder of a well-known chain and a celebrity chef. Those discussions triggered the idea and Manohar offered him to run the restaurant in Dallas. This started the journey of finding a suitable place, learning from mistakes, trying newer things, taking guidance from Vishnuji, and all sorts of things. And the target was a single point to make the VKR, Dallas a successful venture. And then began actual operation, the restaurant was opened on Feb 7, 2021.

“When I started working on this, I was new to everything. I even did not name of equipment used for preparing food. Due to the good advertisement, the brand name, and discount offer, there was a large turnout on an inaugural day and all planning turned into chaos on the very first day. Thus started our journey of the new restaurant business. After one year down the line, when I look back, I think we have achieved a lot in this short span of time,’’ says Kulkarni.

Learning from Challenges –
Meanwhile, Vishnu Manohar himself visited the US and stayed with Kulkarni for almost four months. His guidance about connecting with people, handling operations, overcoming mistakes, developing networks, thinking process was a learning experience for Hemant. That changed him a lot like a restaurant professional. That also reduced his stress while handling the workload and he started managing his IT job as well as Rasoi in an efficient manner.
“ After handling the responsibility, one thing I have learned is that we all have immense potential, but we never explore it and choose to stay in our comfort zone. Running a restaurant is not an easy job. You need to give good service, manage resources including staff and handle customers. We are still at an early stage in this business and learning new things every day. Why we are growing since one year is good food quality, good service despite fewer resources and guidance from Vishnuji,” shared Hemant. He also gave credit to his wife Priyanka who is handling family responsibilities as well as contributing to the hotel.

Moving towards the next milestone –
Now, VKR Dallas has started a bakery and cake shop. It is also planning to add a feather in the cap by starting a new non-veg restaurant with the name Saoji which would have non-veg food varieties across Maharashtra. They are also trying to introduce Maharashtrian cuisine in the curriculum of local hotel management institutions which would also help them to get trained professionals for their business. Engaged in a social cause like distributing food in temples, VKR is also trying to provide employment opportunities through their venture. They are also doing tie-ups with other Desi restaurants.
“One thing is clear for us that we want to promote Maharashtrian food which has a huge variety. We have now started providing breakfast on weekends which is essentially Maharashtrian. We are very much sincere to this motto and sure that people like Maharashtrian food,’’ ends Hemant

Meet Mr. Amit Warkad, the Co-Founder of US IMPACT and Officer of the City of Plano

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Building a life and career is each and everyone’s dream. What brings special meaning to your life is helping others, no matter in what way. Such efforts not only help the community but also the individuals who walk along such paths. Amit Warkad, Officer of the City of Plano, is indeed a personified definition of this ideology. Always enthusiastic, Amit is setting an example of how an Indian can amalgamate with the nation and society they are living in while contributing to its betterment.

Initial Journey and Background –
Amit’s journey in the early years is typically like that of any small-town Indian guy who kept on scaling heights. Born at a maternal place in the Nagar district of Maharashtra. Amit was schooled and completed his graduation for Mechanical Engineering at the city of Aurangabad in 2001. Soon after finishing his MBA from the reputed Welingkar Institute of Management, his professional journey started. He began in a sales team in Emerson network India Pvt ltd and in 2005 moved to L&T Infotech, beginning his reputed career in Mumbai. Later after working for about five years in Mumbai, he shifted to Plano, Dallas in the year 2010 and since then has been a part of the active community in Plano and all around the US.

Entrance in Community Service –
While working on the professional end, Amit also started taking part in the social activities of the Maharashtra Mandal. He always had been a social person and has a huge friend circle may it be in India or US. Around the year 2015/2016, while working in a social field and getting involved in local community efforts he and some of his friends in the neighborhood noticed that there is a gap between Indian American community and the mainstream American political system. Indian Americans are not much aware of the political and administrative systems while the political representatives do not have much knowledge about the issues related to Indian Americans, Amit and his friends found. Even in Indians, priorities are different depending upon your Visa status. There was a need for a platform to educate the Indian Americans on the American political system and educate the American politicians about the Indian American issues and priorities.

The inception of US IMPACT –
There was a need to give voice to Indian American priorities. There was no outreach from either side, the political system, and Indian American community. This issue triggered the need of working on this front and Amit along with his peer’s started efforts of bridging the gap. This urge saw them involved in local elections, connecting political representatives with the Indian community, participating in their election campaigns for them in a variety of forms, and other such things. They started an organization – US IMPACT to make it more structured. They registered it as a state and federal-level Political Action Committee (PAC). Under the umbrella of PAC, they began supporting candidates and building the bridge between the politicians and Indian American community. They were able to coach the local people about the political system, Information about ISD’s, State and federal structure, and opportunities available for participation and functioning of these entities in different stages. They encourage people to take part in the political system and recommended people for volunteer-level positions with the city & ISD. Amit told US IMPACT PAC is more inclined and aligned towards the Republican Party of America.

Campaigning for political candidates – Later, in the 2020 elections, they helped around 70 congressional candidates across the US. They helped candidates in making phone calls to voters, did data analytics for candidates, give them exposure to Indian media houses, and other such things. On the other hand, they organized political and Judicial educational programs for Indian American community too.
Got Indian American Community Centre to Dallas –
Thanks to these consistent efforts of US IMPACT and its impact on the elections, the Republican party also helped to build Indian American Community Center in Coppell that is proving useful for the Indian community here. This was the result as the political system is coming closer to Indian American people now.
Amit’s and his US IMPACT organization work and success are very well praised in Indian media. This was a great achievement by itself as to how the Indian community organizations can function by staying into the mainstream political system and working for the betterment of the Indian American community.

Appointed on the Board of Community Relations Commission of the City of Plano –
While doing all these things, Amit decided to personally participate in the Community Relations Commission for the City of Plano and formally applied for that. Completing the formal process, he got nominated and started working for one of the important Commissions of the City of Plano. He is designated as an officer of the city and his designation as a Commissioner. This commission is responsible for recommending funding allocations to City Council from three different grant funds. They do the evaluations of the projects and provide recommendations to the city council. The Final decision is taken by the City Council based on the recommendations.

To provide a solution, be the solution –
They also formed a non-profit organization WE IMPACT, which is working on providing workable solutions to various social problems. In the Indian community, some women who come to the US face domestic violence, for some or other reasons. Helpless without financial independence, they need support in this regard. WE IMPACT works for such women and provide them helping hand. In addition to that, WE IMPACT also has projects in the area of Tracking Internationally adopted children. Each year 1000s of kids are adopted and brought into the US from different countries (India and China being the most prominent countries from where the kids are adopted). There is no formal tracking process to check on the wellbeing of these children once they are adopted. WE IMPACT is taking an advocacy initiative with the Attorney General’s office to implement a basic tracking of adopted children. It also organizes programs like Yoga for New Beginnings for the rehabilitation of soldiers who suffer mental and emotional trauma.
“Our basic idea is to connect Indian American community to the mainstream here and bridge the gap as much as possible. Now People emphasize Amit to enter electoral politics, but there are no such plans for now- said Amit. Through WE IMPACT and other work, we are purely concentrating on social purpose and problem-solving. Being in an active social circle has always been part of my life since childhood. That is still alive there and I enjoy what I am doing now for the community,” reacts Amit.

Marathi School Of Plano passing the culture through ‘Languag’ian Connect’

Marathi School Of Plano passing the culture through ‘Languag’ian Connect’

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Languages are an inevitable part of history. One, histories are written in some or other languages, and secondly, the study of languages is also a part of studying history. In other words, languages are the carriers of history. That’s the reason why every community in the world tries some or other way to conserve their language. And the best way to conserve the language is to pass on its legacy to the next generation. Plano Marathi school from Dallas is doing exactly the same, stick to basics and deliver the best!

How it started –
The birth of Marathi school was more an amateur and little but well-spirited effort. A few people from Maharashtra Mandal started giving primary lessons of the language to kids in the Marathi community. It was an informal school held at somebody’s house. excerpts like Shlokas, introduction to letters, primary writing, and reading of Marathi were taught to children. This was in the year 2004 and it continued for the next few years, thanks to the dedicated volunteer efforts of Mandal people. Around 2009-10 it was decided that school will be run as an activity and under the shelter of Maharashtra Mandal and this was the point when the Marathi school started expanding its wings.

While talking with Mr. Mandar Gandhe – Marathi School co-ordinator of Plano, He told us that, The Plano Marathi school then was shifted to a new place owned by EdGurukul in 2009 and since then it is working unstoppably well. The school has classes from KG to 5th grade and those are conducted for one hour every Sunday. The school in its new premises started growing slowly. Very soon the school time was increased up to three hours, from 9 am to 12 noon on every Sunday. It was run in three batches, up to 2019, when physical schools were stopped due to Covid, the institution had 28 teachers and 10 odd volunteers.

Marathi School Plano students

Curriculum and Volunteers –
The school has a proper curriculum for Marathi and teachers give their lessons accordingly. Every senior teacher is accompanied and assisted by a co-teacher. This system has helped to bring flexibility in human resource handling issues and also to give training to voluntary teachers. To reduce the pressure on teachers about organizing co-curricular activities, some volunteers also have been appointed. Over a decade, the school has gained immense faith of parents who are not only enrolling their wards for classes but also showing interest in volunteering. Believe it or not, ‘Plano’ now actually has a waiting list of volunteers willing to wholeheartedly contribute to school!

Covid time and increase flow of students –
During Covid, teaching Marathi through online mode was indeed a challenge for teachers. Imagine a teacher teaching about how to draw a Marathi letter, from where to start and where to end. This effort is itself difficult in physical mode and online mode makes it tedious even more. Yet, teachers accepted the challenge and are doing it successfully. The wonderful thing is that the number of students actually increased during online education, reaching up to 175 students. Now, the situation is very spontaneous! The school management needs to deny admissions to some students due to full batches.

Association with School Districts –
The school is now getting recognition from ISDs also, while students are getting credit points for learning Marathi as a foreign language.
Mr. Gandhe told that the foundation work of this accomplishment was done by other Marathi Schools. He specially mentioned that Vaishnavi Apte from Irving Marathi School has done several meetings and followup with the ISD’s. She played a significant role in the high school credits work. This integration with School ISD’s would help to encourage more students to learn the language along with their formal education, feels Mandar.

Inculcating Marathi Culture Informally –
Along with formal classes, the school also organizes various activities at different festivals. MakarSankrant festival was held with the active participation of students, an inspiring lecture was organized to underline the greatness of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on Shiv Jayanti. In addition to this, initiatives like Pizza Parties are also held by the school. Such get-togethers were held during the Covid period by following all rules.
On Diwali day, 200 models of forts were imported from India and distributed to students. The initiative was very well welcomed by parents and enjoyed immensely by students. This also helped artisans from India financially who were otherwise struggling due to loss of work in the Covid period. Indeed, it was a proud moment for the school said, Mr. Mandar.

The foundation for the success of school :

The success of the school is because of the team effort’ of the volunteer teachers and coordinator group. Everyone here put their heart and hard work while doing the work for school, humbly says Mandar.

Eying for future –
The Plano Marathi school has already started planning for the future like starting physical school again in the post-Covid era. “The school is now entering into a more organized phase. Many people have contributed in past, laid a foundation, worked consistently and hence we could reach here. BMM(Bruhan Maharashtra Mandal) always took us under their wings and yet gave us all freedom to run a good Marathi school. Children in our school chat in Marathi with their grandparents back in India, that too in longer communications. So, maybe we are getting real success in connecting the dots and connecting the roots.

Isn’t this a real achievement,” exclaimed proudly Mr. Mandar Gandhe.

Dr. Amol  Khedgikar – Indeed Invaluable Persona!

Dr. Amol  Khedgikar – Indeed Invaluable Persona!

Reading Time: 4 minutes

While rushing our lives day to day and eying for so-called developed, urban life, many times we forgot that this world is not there only for the human race. There are hundreds of species and what we should learn is their co-existence. While thousands live their lives ignoring this fact, people like Dr. Amol  Khedgikar put an example of the successful amalgamation of the wild and human world, making co-existence an actual thing.

Journey into the wildlife –
Dr. Amol started as a young 7-year-old kid who wanted to help animals in distress in any way possible. Started helping injured birds, animals and began with convincing people to not kill snakes, This passion soon grew into a lifelong obsession and wildlife conservation became not only his profession but his purpose in life.
Dr.  Amol started his journey as a wildlifer in India itself. As a veterinary student and then a practitioner, he visited Katraj zoo near Pune in Maharashtra several times. There he started learning the first lessons of dealing with wild animals including snakes. Working regularly on this, he got an opportunity to visit Konkan repeatedly and that enriched his experience as a wildlife handler. At this coastal area of India, Amol first started watching and understanding the behavior of crocodiles.
Later, after some years, when he started working in the US, he got the opportunity to look into the life of crocodiles. There he first noticed some change in the potency of male crocodiles, a decrease in their population, and resultant effects. The same thing he had observed in India also and that experience came in handy to him in the US too. This research on Crocodiles gave him exposure to the amazing world of allegators and a rich experience. Since then, Amol has worked in different regions across the globe including India and other countries. Whatever may be your work area, consistency is the key to success and that proved true to him. Dedicated efforts for his research not only gave him fame and success but also insight into the amazing world of animals. Years of good work have made him a man with loads of knowledge, experience, and of course, insight into the world and life at large.

Dr Amol in his various projects

When life was at stake –

And when you talk about experiences of wildlife, Dr. Amol Khedgikar has loads of these stacked down memory lane. While doing his study in Tadoba Tiger Project in Maharashtra in India, he was all of a sudden confronted with the tigress who was in search of her cubs. Amol was hardly a few feet away from the mother and was feeling her angry breath and terrifying roars. Thanks to the experience of many hours in the forest, he could hold his composure, restrict his movement and try everything to disturb the tigress anymore. One hit of a strong paw or grip of her teeth could have been the last moment for Amol. But that day, luck was on the better side. As if the tigress had more jobs to do than to attack him, she just went away and disappeared into the jungle. But, the shivering moment has made a permanent imprint on the mind.
Another experience of getting caught by crocodiles was equally life-threatening and once again luck favored Amol. And why this one, Amol has loads of such stories to tell and experiences to share. Nothing of such things could stop him from going deep into the wild world and feeling the beauty of divine nature.

Dr Amol with Indian Cobra

Service to community, service to humanity –
Dr. Amol has been a great help for the community in Dallas and around, as he has rushed many times to rescue snakes and other animals. In all such situations, people call him, and Amol or his team provides their valuable help. ‘ We go to many places for such rescue work, but we also put a condition to people. As a value or say it a principle, we ask people not to kill the animal until we reach and rescue it. It is their world also,’ says Dr. Amol. As he will continue this rescue work in the future, now he is trying to build a more wide and strong network of rescuers which could save the lives of many wild animals and also help people. No doubt, with his kind of love and dedication to the wild world, he is going to achieve this very soon.

Dr. Amol’s message to the community

Dr. Amol believes that every person on the planet can make a positive difference to their environment regardless of where they are. They just need to identify where they can help and just getto it!
Amol in Marathi means invaluable, beyond any price. Dr. Khedgikar has left no stone unturned to prove this name. Indeed Invaluable he is…!
