After Markham, a city in Canada, honoured AR Rahman by naming a street in his honour, the celebrated music composer said he now feels more responsible to keep working hard and inspiring people.

Rahman, who completed three decades in the Indian film industry earlier this month, penned a note of gratitude for the authorities of Markham in Ontario, Canada on Twitter.

“I never imagined this ever in my life. I am very grateful to all of you, the Mayor of Markham, Canada (Frank Scarpitt) and counsellors, Indian Consulate General (Apoorva Srivastava) and the people of Canada…

“I feel like this gives me immense responsibility to do much more and be inspiring, not so get tired and not to retire yet. Even if I get tired I’ll remember that I have more things to do, more people to connect, more bridges to cross,” the multiple award-winning musician said.

The 55-year-old, currently in Canada for his music tour, also shared pictures from the inauguration ceremony on the microblogging site on Sunday. The city of Markham had announced that a street will be named in Rahman’s honour back in November 2013.

“The name AR Rahman is not mine. It means merciful. The merciful is the quality of the common God we all have and one can only be the servant of the merciful. So let that name bring peace, prosperity, happiness and health to all the people living in Canada. God bless you all,” he added.

Rahman further thanked the people of his homeland India and his collaborators.

“I want to thank my brothers and sisters of India for all the love. All the creative people who worked with me, who gave me the inspiration to rise up and celebrate hundred years of cinema; with all the legends included. I am a very small drop in the ocean,” the composer said.

His upcoming releases include films such as “Cobra” and “Ponniyin Selvan: I”.

Oscar winner Indian musician will be performing at North America’s oldest music festival on Aug 20

Come August and it’s time for music lovers to head straight to North of Chicago as Mozart of Madras, musician A.R. Rahman is all set to perform at the internationally renowned Ravinia Festival.

North America’s oldest music festival held at the serene 36-acre park nestled amongst trees plays host to presenting a large variety of different events throughout the summer.

Rahman, a maestro at creating music, has been known from Bollywood to Hollywood for his unique style and musings from Eastern classical music, electronic music sounds, global music genres, and traditional orchestral arrangements.

These musical mixings have propelled Rahman’s career, rightfully winning him two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, and more for the soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire featuring hits like “Jai Ho” and other Bollywood classics.

Audiences will hear these scores come to life on the Ravinia stage on Aug 20, as part of his North American 2022 tour. As Rahman’s style shakes up Ravinia’s calendar, endearingly, it pays homage to the festival’s classical roots.

Ravinia is an internationally renowned, not-for-profit music festival that presents outstanding performances by the world’s greatest artists.

It has been presenting performances of a full range of classical music in its open-air pavilion and enclosed recital halls, by the world’s greatest composers and musicians, along with a variety of other kinds of light classical, jazz and popular music.

First opened on Aug 15, 1904, Ravinia remains the oldest and most programmatically diverse music festival in North America, attracting about 600,000 guests to over 120 events each year.

From 1919 through 1931, Ravinia was known as the “summer opera capital of the world,” welcoming to its stage the most-celebrated singers from Europe who sailed to America to perform at the Met.

Ravinia shuttered for four years during the Great Depression, reopening in 1936 with a greater emphasis on symphonic music, hosting the first formal summer residency of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, an enviable relationship that exists to this day.

Ravinia continues to attract headline-making artists from all genres of music. The festival’s illustrious roster includes Marin Alsop, Louis Armstrong, The Beach Boys, Leonard Bernstein, Tony Bennett and many other musical geniuses.
