Right from Swami Vivekananda’s groundbreaking speech at the 1893 World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago, United States to the exceptional reception accorded to Mahatma Gandhi on his foreign visits, modern history is a testament to the glory of India.

For the past 4-5 decades India and Indians have been making an indelible mark across the continents, countries, and some of the biggest names spanning across different industries.

And wherever they might be, Indians make sure that no event connected to their motherland goes unnoticed and is celebrated with full fervour and enthusiasm. And what’s more important than the Independence Day of India?

Just like many previous occasions, this year too Indians across the world on Tuesday enthusiastically celebrated India’s 77th Independence Day by gathering at the diplomatic missions, exchanging greetings and rendering the national anthem and patriotic songs.

In Washington, America, President Joe Biden joined Indian Americans in celebrating India’s 77th Independence Day. Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State said the bilateral relationship between the United States and India is deeper and more expansive than ever.

In the lead-up to the 2024 US presidential election, speculation surrounds the potential candidates for the Republican Party’s nomination. Despite facing legal challenges, former US President Donald Trump is perceived as the frontrunner. However, as many as three Indian-American leaders are seeking to challenge his position and “make America great again.” Among them are Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley, and Hirsh Vardhan Singh, who have expressed their intentions to contest the nomination.

The Republican Party’s national convention is scheduled for July 15-18, 2024, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the official presidential nominee will be formally selected.

All about the 3 Indian-Americans looking to challenge Donald Trump in the US Presidential race

Nikki Haley
Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and Trump’s initial ambassador to the United Nations, is the only woman contender in the Republican primary contest.

Despite being perceived as an underestimated underdog, she proudly recounted her tenure in the Trump administration. Nevertheless, she openly criticised Trump’s baseless post-election pursuit to challenge alleged voter fraud that cost him the 2020 election.

Despite polling low, Haley demonstrated remarkable fundraising abilities, with the Stand For America Fund Inc. Super PAC raising $18.7 million from April to June, amassing a total of $26 million in donations. Notably, she garnered support from affluent GOP donors such as Kenneth Langone, Alice Walton, and Kenneth Fisher, who each contributed $6,600.

Vivek Ramaswamy
Vivek Ramaswamy, a tech entrepreneur and son of Indian immigrants, entered the US Republican presidential nomination race as an outsider but has now surged to the third position.

A Reuters-Ipsos poll revealed that he enjoys the support of 9% of Republican leaders, while former President Donald Trump leads with a commanding 47%, followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at 19%. Ramaswamy’s campaign focuses on innovative drug development and healthcare transformation, vowing to restore meritocracy and reduce reliance on China.

Impressively, he raised $7.7 million in the second quarter, with $5.4 million from his personal funds. Since launching his bid, he has invested a total of $16 million.

Hirsh Vardhan Singh
Hirsh Vardhan Singh, a 38-year-old engineer, has joined the crowded US Presidential race as a conservative Republican. He aims to prioritise citizens and restore the conservative wing of the New Jersey Republican Party.

Despite unsuccessful attempts in previous elections, he remains committed to his “America First” principles. Singh describes himself as the “only pureblood candidate” for never giving in to Covid vaccinations.

His candidacy has drawn attention due to his staunch conservative values and positions on vaccination.

‘Only 1 rice bag per family’: US stores limit rice purchases as NRIs hoard amid India’s export curbs

In response to India’s announcement of a ban on the export of non-basmati rice, a surge in panic buying of rice has been witnessed in departmental stores across the United States.

The escalating demand has led to many stores imposing restrictions on the number of rice bags customers can purchase, resulting in reports of empty shelves.

To manage the situation and ensure fair distribution, numerous stores have put up notices limiting customers to purchasing only one rice bag per family.

However, concerns have arisen regarding hoarding, with fears that some individuals may stockpile rice and attempt to sell it at significantly higher prices through online forums.

Concerns about hoarding and price gouging amidst global impact
The impact of India’s export ban on non-basmati rice has resonated globally, particularly among the Indian diaspora. Non-resident Indians (NRIs) have reportedly bought 10-15 bags of Sona Masoori rice in response to the ban, as reported by Business Today.

Many NRIs took to X (formerly Twitter), to share the impact of the export ban on rice, with videos showcasing scenes of sheer panic buying and heavy rush at grocery stores.

Despite the concerns, Kiran Kumar Pola, the director of leading rice exporter Deccan Grains India, reassured NRIs in the USA that there are sufficient rice stocks in the country, expected to last for six months.

A group of rice exporters from Telangana also reached out to The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), requesting the reclassification and lifting of the prohibition on non-basmati rice exports. Their assurance that there are ample stocks of non-basmati rice in the US market after India’s export ban seeks to allay concerns.

However, despite the authorities and experts assuring sufficient stock for the next six months, many NRIs on X (formerly Twitter) have complained about the skyrocketing prices in US grocery stores, typically driven by short supply and high demand.

The export ban implemented by India pertains only to non-basmati rice, with Basmati rice still allowed for trading outside the country. A majority of South Indians have a preference for Sona Masoori rice, which falls under the non-basmati category.

The Indian food ministry addressed the situation, stating that the export ban is essential to ensure sufficient availability and stabilise prices in the domestic market. They cited a significant 11.5 per cent increase in retail rice prices over the past 12 months, along with a 35 per cent year-on-year surge in Indian exports of non-basmati white rice during the second quarter, driven by global demand.

The price of a 9.07 kg rice bag, previously quoted at $16-18, has now doubled, with some places experiencing prices as high as $50.

As per statistics, India exports an average of 6,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice to the USA every month, with Telangana and Andhra Pradesh contributing 4,000 tonnes to this volume.

Another spectacular achievement, Rishi Ramesh has been named the CAPTAIN of this under-19 team! What an opportunity to really showcase his skills as an exceptional leader and player!

During the U19 National Championships in Van Nuys, California, the Men’s Under 19 Selection Panel faced a challenging task of choosing 14 players and three reserves for the upcoming event. Their decision was based on the performances at the National Championships and earlier Hub and Zonal competitions, along with USA Cricket’s criteria, including attitude, fitness, and skills. The Panel also expressed their intent to continue monitoring all players, including those not selected, during local and domestic tournaments in the following months.

For preparation, the USA Cricket team is scheduled to travel to Toronto on August 2nd, where they will engage in a week-long build-up to the main event. During this period, they will play warm-up matches against their arch-rivals, Canada, before their first official World Cup qualifier match on August 11th.

The tournament will feature teams from Argentina and Bermuda, alongside hosts Canada and the USA. Unfortunately, Suriname withdrew from the competition earlier this month. As a result, it is likely that the tournament will follow a double-round robin format, with each team playing against each other twice. With only one spot at the World Cup up for grabs, every game will be of utmost importance!

Chairman of the Men’s U19 Selection Panel, Amer Afzaluddin, said, “ We are excited by this group of players, and thank the Board for Conducting a successful National Tournament,” “As more children are taking up the sport, I also want to acknowledge all junior cricket stakeholders around the nation, and how essential they have been, and will continue to be to this growth. We are confident that the team will perform well in the qualifiers, and we wish the team and its management the best of luck.”

The USA is eagerly looking forward to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, filled with hope for the talented Under-19 cricket team. These young players have a great opportunity ahead, as their performances could lead to being selected for the national team and even catching the attention of big leagues like IPL and MLC. This is just the beginning of their journey, and they have the potential to become future stars in American cricket. The entire cricketing community wishes them the best of luck as they aim for success on the international stage. With hard work, dedication, and passion, these young players can create a bright and exciting future for cricket in the USA.

Modi’s trip was most extraordinary in history of US-India relations: Garcetti

Modi’s trip was most extraordinary in history of US-India relations: Garcetti

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic state visit to the United States last month was the “most extraordinary” visit in the history of this bilateral relationship, America’s Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti said.

“We’ve had some very large moments in the past… But this was probably the deepest and widest agenda of not just aspirations, but real deliverable things for our economy, for defence, the four Ps as I call them, peace, prosperity, the planet and the people that we represent,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi last month travelled to the US on his maiden state visit during which he held wide-ranging talks with President Joe Biden. Modi also addressed the joint session of the US Congress, becoming the first Indian leader to do so twice.

“It was the most extraordinary visit, I think, certainly in the history of US-India relations,” Garcetti told PTI in an interview.

Since the historic state visit, he noted, there has been no let up. “Both my colleagues in India have said that the Indian government has been following up with a series of meetings to implement the agreements, and we (are) here. One of the reasons I’m in Washington is to keep that momentum going as our president comes to Delhi for the G-20 meeting,” he said.

There are so many key deliverables from the visit. Obviously one that got a lot of attention is the GE jet engine deal, which will fundamentally change the level of cooperation we have on the next generation of Indian fighter jets and also integrate our militaries and our defence together, he noted.

“But I can also think of other things like the relaxing of the tariffs and the trade war that we had during the Trump years in which steel was taxed here, and we had American agricultural program products taxed in India. That’s a huge change, making something for Indian workers that are in the steel sector and for our agricultural products finally to have free flow. Educational exchange we grew and expanded,” he said.

“The last area is our critical emerging technologies: whether it’s artificial intelligence, whether it’s quantum computing, whether it’s space, or whether it’s the telecommunications, I think India and the US really want to cement a deep friendship and co-production, the research and development together of the future underscored by our values,” he said.

“We can either use technology to hurt people, divide people, or we can use it to connect people, protect people, even detect diseases and heal people. So to me, that was one of the best outcomes, not just for India and the United States, but also for the world,” Garcetti said.

Observing that sky is the limit for US India relationship, he said since the two sides are collaborating in space, maybe even the sky’s not the limit. “We are going from the depths of the ocean to the heavens, in terms of the work that we’re doing. Space, the maritime domain,” he said.

“I think by the end of the year, our leaders will have seen each other face to face six or seven times in a single year. We know the rapport that they have together, but it also reflects the hard work and integration of our governments. That in turn reflects business investment and the people-to-people ties. We have a record number of visas that we’re going to process this year in our consulates and in our embassy from India. So that’s reflecting, I think that India loves America and America loves India,” he said.

The former mayor of Los Angeles has been in India for the last few months, during which he says he has fallen in love with India all over again.

“The people, the culture, the food, the diversity, the struggle, the success. This is in so many ways, the future, but it also links us in so many ways to the past. It’s a unique country, a crossroads and a bridge. And for me, I want to introduce more Americans to India. Part of my job as an ambassador is not just to bring India to America, but to bring America to India so that we can see that,” he said.

“I do think that this chapter, I’m noticing it whether it’s in the buildings coming up in Hyderabad, whether it’s the infrastructure that I saw in Mumbai and Kolkata that’s being done, or just even at the village level chaiwala using UPI to accept a payment that India isn’t just someone’s back office. It isn’t just coming out of poverty. It’s producing ideas, it’s producing companies, it’s producing things that are improving people’s lives and potentially throughout the world,” he said.

“So I think if we strengthen this bridge (in) both directions, really, we can do anything together, whether it’s health, whether it’s defence, whether it’s economic prosperity or even women’s empowerment,” Garcetti added.

Exciting Conclusion! Independence Cup Wraps Up in Dallas!

Exciting Conclusion! Independence Cup Wraps Up in Dallas!

In an exhilarating display of passion and sportsmanship, Texas hosted a cricketing spectacle like no other—the Independence Cup. Throughout an eventful long weekend, cricketers were treated to four days of intense competition, as teams from various states came together to battle it out on the pitch. The Independence Cup not only showcased the remarkable talent and camaraderie among players but also served as a celebration of unity and national pride. There were 4 age categories, U11, U13, U15, and U17.

In the U11 age category, there was a healthy sense of competitiveness in the air. The teams showcased their skills and determination, striving to outdo each other in every match. It was a testament to the sportsmanship and camaraderie among these young athletes that despite the intense competition, there were no ill feelings or animosity between the players. In the finals, it was a fascinating twist that the top two teams didn’t face each other directly, and instead, the ultimate winner was determined by their Net Run Rate (NRR). This added an extra layer of excitement to the tournament, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats until the very end. The champions of the U11 age category were the SDCCYA BOLTS, who emerged victorious with an impressive NRR of 4.8601. Their consistent performances and excellent teamwork paid off, and they celebrated their hard-earned victory with pure joy and pride. The MCA U11 Tigers, despite falling short in the finals, displayed incredible talent and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Their NRR of 1.6571 was a testament to their competitive spirit and determination to be the best they could be. At the end of the day, in sports, there can only be one winner and one loser.

In the slightly older age category, we saw a little bit more experience where players know what is coming but can still take valuable lessons from each encounter. There were a total of 14 teams in this competition so each team had to make the most of their games. One of our Dallas teams, the MCA U13 Lions took home the championship as they narrowly escaped a tight situation. Unfortunately for the Runners Up, The Austin Invincibles had one game where there was no result. Meaning the game either got forfeited or stopped. The final between the two strong teams, the Lions and the Invincibles would have been a game to surely watch, but hey what can we say? Maybe things happened for a reason. All in All, the U13 age category was no less of an excitement as these players are sure to be talented enough to play high-level cricket.

In one of the most competitive age categories, the U15 age category had one of the most exciting tournaments. The final of this came down to NCAC V.S. HYCC Eagles. Each team had an equal chance to steal the cup, but at the end of the game, the HYCC Eagles earned the pride to hoist it high in the air. There were 14 teams as well in this competition. Everyone here has had equal experience. We sure saw that in the high quality of these matches across the weekend. Obviously, there was still a lot to learn as mistakes were made, and matches were lost. Some teams took the competition too lightly and indeed had to reap the losses. Others took advantage of timely opportunities and snagged victory from the hands of defeat. This is Cricket. This is what makes the game so beautiful and enjoyable.

The most experienced age category, the U17 age category was the most exciting championship. From almost 6-7 sixes per game to almost one bowler taking 5 wickets, an immense amount of passion, skill, determination, and hard work for the game was seen. Every game came down to the wire, with as much pressure from even the tiniest moments as shown. It is no wonder, then, that every game in the U17 championship comes down to the wire. The intense competition creates an environment where even the smallest moments can carry immense pressure. Every run scored, every wicket taken, and every catch made becomes pivotal in the outcome of the game. The players understand the significance of these moments and give them all to seize the opportunity and emerge victorious. The spectators are left on the edge of their seats, witnessing a battle of nerves and skills, as these oldest kids demonstrate their unwavering determination to succeed. The proud champions who took home this U17 championship were the MCA U17 Panthers! Everyone on this team worked hard and selflessly. Great job, Panthers.

Overall, the Independence Cup served as a platform for young cricketers to display their talent and passion for the sport. It highlighted the importance of sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. Each age category showcased the growth and potential of these athletes, ensuring that the future of cricket remains bright in Texas. This is to a successful Independence Cup Tournament.
