India Sweets and Spices review – likable Indian American family comedy

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A young Indian American woman Alia (Sophia Ali) rolls her eyes at her mother’s generation in the affluent New Jersey community where she grew up. The aunties, she jokes, are a bunch of “sari-wearing zombies”, only interested in shopping and gossiping about who’s getting married and who’s getting fat. Alia’s assessment of her mum – and her own privilege – are the subject of this extremely likable mother-daughter comedy with a smart script from Geeta Malik, who has said in interviews her affectionate send-up is semi-autobiographical.

Alia is back home for the summer holidays planning to chill. Her dad Ranjit (Adil Hussain) is a successful doctor; her mum Sheila (Manisha Koirala) is devoted to keeping up appearances. All the families in their world take it in turns to throw fancy parties, trying to outdo each other with the catering. On a whim, Alia invites the Duttas, a family who’ve just taken over the local south Asian shop, to a party at her parents’ house (mainly because she fancies their son Varun, played by Rish Shah). It’s a clumsy thing to do: her dad is appalled (“who next, the gardener?”). At the party, the other guests are frosty and condescending towards the “shopkeepers”.

Malik’s script has interesting, awkward things to say about class: Alia is completely oblivious to her privilege, and unexpectedly it turns out that Mrs Dutta (Deepti Gupta), knew Alia’s mother from university in Delhi; they were political activists together. The impossibility of ever really knowing our parents is a familiar storyline, but it’s told here with real generosity and warmth. Malik slyly pokes fun, but never meanly. This is satire with the thermostat turned up to 22 degrees.

India Sweets and Spices is released on 2 December in cinemas.

‘Wasn’t trying to be disrespectful.’ Indian-American influencer apologises for calling Varanasi ‘scary’

Indian-American influencer Aparna Singh, who faced a huge backlash for calling the holy city of Varanasi the “scariest city” she had ever visited, recently apologised for her controversial remarks.

The influencer-entrepreneur uploaded another video in TikTok and claimed she was sorry if she came across as “disrespectful.”

“Like I said I would like to apologise because I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful. I was simply just saying my experience,” she explained.

However, the influencer was also miffed that apparently nobody cared about the “good videos” she shared about India but latched onto the one negative clip she uploaded. “Maybe it was the tone, the music. I have been traveling everywhere and I have been posting about Jaipur, I’ve been posting about Mumbai. Y’all don’t care about the good videos I post but as soon as I say the bad experience I had, it just blown up – TikTok, that’s how y’all are.”

She also added that she didn’t mean to disrespect any community, but the city of Varanasi didn’t “vibe” with her. She was aware that it is a sacred place, visited by many pilgrims but it was not to her taste. “It is a beautiful country but this specific area, it just wasn’t my vibe. I get the people who go there for a spiritual journey; it is a sacred city with a lot of history. I get it, but it just wasn’t my vibe.”

Singh was brutally trolled when she uploaded a TikTok video titled ‘Scariest city I ever visited: Varanasi’. In the video, she was seen criticising the city for its squalor and lack of hygiene. In the video, the influencer also said that she was disgusted by how the river Ganges was so polluted. “You see people are bathing in it. On the way to the hotel you see dead bodies being burned, and look at the hotel – how creepy does it look?” she said.

Another user tried to clear some of her misconceptions. They explained that the reason why the river Ganges is so crowded is because Hindu devotees believe that the water of the Ganges is holy and washes away all their ‘papam’ or sins. They also added that the city remains heavily crowded throughout the year as many people come to spend their last years in the city as Hindu scriptures claim that anyone who breathes their last in Varanasi will achieve moksha from the circle of birth-death Another user tried to clear some of her misconceptions. US opens new visitor visa appointment slots in India

US opens new visitor visa appointment slots in India

To facilitate holiday travel, the United States has opened a number of new appointment slots for B1/B2 visa applicants, who are eligible for interview waivers, for December in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.

“Looking for a B1/B2 interview waiver (dropbox) visa appointment? Good news! We’ve opened a number of B1/B2 interview waiver appointments for the coming month in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Book now in time for holiday travel,” the US Embassy in New Delhi tweeted on Monday.

The current wait time for an appointment for B1/B2 interview waiver appointments is 233 days in Delhi, 297 in Mumbai and 171 days in Chennai. Applicants can opt for the interview waiver program if they are renewing any visa (including B1/B2 visas) within 48 months of expiration.

For first-time applicants for the US business (B-1) and tourist (B-2) visitor visas, wait time has touched almost three years, for those not eligible for interview waivers. “The global median wait time for a tourist visa (B1/B2) interview appointment is under two months as of this month,” according to the US State Department.

To address the growing backlog, the US has made more applicants eligible for interview waiver, sending drop box cases abroad for adjudication and getting temporary staffers.

While students get top priority in admission season, next on the list is expediting drop box cases for skilled workers, repeat B1/B2 visa seekers (whose visas expired within four years of application that now makes them eligible for interview waiver) and crew. It could possibly be several months before the interview wait time for B1/B2 starts dropping.

The US expects the processing times to rebound faster than projected and expects it to reach pre-pandemic levels in Fiscal Year 2023.

Air India, has announced the launch of a new flight connecting Mumbai with New York from February 2023 as part of the strengthening and expansion of its global footprint.

The new Mumbai-New York service will operate daily to John F Kennedy International Airport using B777-200LR aircraft, and will commence Feb 14, 2023, India’s leading airline announced Nov 23.

It will complement Air India’s existing daily service from Delhi to New York area’s John F Kennedy International Airport and four weekly flights to Newark Liberty airport. This takes Air India’s India-US frequency to 47 non-stop flights per week.

A Star Alliance member, Air India also announced new flights connecting Mumbai with New York, Paris and Frankfurt, and the resumption of non-stop flights connecting Delhi with Copenhagen, Milan and Vienna.

This expansion comes as the airline continues to make progress in augmenting its fleet with newly- leased aircraft, and the return of existing aircraft to active service, Air India said in a press release.

With the resumption of these flights, Air India will serve 7 cities in Europe with 79 weekly non-stop flights – 48 to the United Kingdom and 31 to Continental Europe.

Commenting on this expansion, Campbell Wilson, CEO and MD, Air India, said, “A key element of our five-year transformation plan, Vihaan.AI, is to strengthen India’s global network, connecting India’s major cities with even more destinations.”

“The introduction of these new non-stop flights to New York, Milan, Vienna, Copenhagen, Paris and Frankfurt, is another step in that journey, which will accelerate as our aircraft fleet expands. We look forward to welcoming guests and sharing Air India’s warm Indian hospitality with them,” he said.
