Meet the newest Indian American cultural product and the American Girl’s “2023 Girl of the Year” doll.

Since its first line of dolls was introduced in 1986, American Girl has launched a series of dolls from different ethnic groups, religions, and social classes. The company sells its dolls and books that accompany them in its stores and online.

Kavi is the first Indian American and South Asian American doll released by the company. It is available for purchase on the company’s website.

The introduction of Kavi is a testament to the growing importance of the nearly 5 million-strong Indian American community.

In a blog post introducing Kavi, bestselling author Varsha Bajaj writes about the importance of Kavi’s story. “Kavi is a trailblazer as American Girl’s first Indian American doll,” she writes. “The story is important to all the young girls who will see parts of their lives represented. Stories can be both mirrors and windows, allowing readers to see themselves and others who are different from them, and I hope that Kavi’s story is a welcoming window for girls who might be unfamiliar with Kavi’s world.”

It is no surprise that Kavi came from New Jersey. The state has the largest concentration of Indian Americans. They consist of 4.35 percent of the state’s population. Nearly 72 percent of the Garden State’s Indian American population is first-generation immigrants who were born in India or another country.

The borough was quick to embrace Kavi.

Mayor Jonathan M. Busch tweeted on Thursday: “We are so excited that American Girl chose Metuchen. Our Borough is a diverse, vibrant community with residents and programming that reflect the world around us. Kavi is a welcome addition to the ‘Brainy Borough’ and we can’t wait for the children in our community to share her and their Metuchen stories with the rest of the country.”

Bajaj, who has written a journal and a novel based on the Indian American doll, writes that Kavi is a proud Indian American.

“Kavi’s family celebrates their Indian American culture through dance, food, clothing, and holidays,” she writes. “Kavi takes weekly classes in classic Indian dance, and her favorite holiday to celebrate with her family is Diwali, which lasts five days every fall. Kavi also shares her culture in meaningful ways with her friends and classmates.”

Kavi loves performing. She even choreographs a Bollywood routine with her friends for their school revue! And whether she’s heading to dance practice or off to Broadway her grandmother, she keeps her favorite accessories close at hand.

Kavi’s features, according to the American Girl website, include “a huggable cloth body, brown eyes that open and close, medium-length layered dark-brown hair styled in a half ponytail, and a movable head and limbs made of smooth vinyl. Kavi arrives wearing a layered, cropped mesh top with a multicolored print; cotton underwear; silver jogger-style pants; and pink tennis shoes.”

Accessories include an “elephant good-luck charm, a hot-pink faux-fur bucket hat featuring an embroidered AG logo, a cuff bracelet, a black quilted-style purse that can be worn crossbody or over the shoulder, and a day planner.”

The United States of America has long been hailed as a popular student destination owing to the reputation of its universities and the prestige attached to studying in them. The US is home to some of the best universities and colleges in the world. Students gain a plethora of exposure and are introduced to a world of networking opportunities through these universities and colleges.

There are plenty of reasons that have kept the country’s higher education popular among students even today, let’s look at some of them below :

THE POPULARITY OF STEM COURSES
Courses in the field of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) are the most popular, especially among Indian students studying in the US. Estimates suggest that during the year 2020-21, 77 percent of the Indian students studying in the country were enrolled in STEM courses.

Of these, approximately 35 percent were part of computer science and mathematics courses. Additionally, as of 2022, the US government announced the Optional Practical Training Programme, which gave students enrolled in STEM courses the opportunity to find internships and stay in the country for up to 36 months. This gives them a distinct advantage over their colleagues enrolled in other courses.

THE EASE OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS

Universities in the US have taken special measures to ensure that their application process is simple and without hurdles in a bid to attract more international students. For instance, approximately 84 percent of US universities offer the chance to students to complete their application process online, and a large cohort has also enabled the online submission of immigration forms.

This is a significant incentive for students worldwide to apply to these universities. Furthermore, those enrolled in a college in the US can easily transfer their credits if they get selected for a better college during their course.

THE FLEXIBILITY IN COURSE SELECTION

Students enrolled at universities in the US can choose not only their college and the programme but also the courses they want to study within the programme. Most offer a wide variety of unconventional combinations that are otherwise not available in other universities.

Not only this, but universities in the US also allow students to take a gap year, giving them more flexibility to explore and balance their lives parallelly.

For example, those pursuing an undergraduate degree here can enroll in different courses before deciding on the subject they want to major in, in their second year of education.

Graduate students, on the other hand, can choose from a myriad of electives along with their main subjects. This way, they are not stuck with a course they do not want to study and can make an informed choice.

GREATER EXPOSURE

The US welcomes students across nations; it’s a global hub for international students. Thus, every student enrolled gets exposed to a milieu of new cultures and ways of living.

Such exposure is excellent for personal and professional development. The students learn to adapt and work well in a team. This is a desirable quality for employers across spectrums, opening up more opportunities for students from these universities.

BOTTOMLINE
Universities in the US have emerged as an attractive option to students worldwide, particularly to Indian students wishing to pursue higher education. The aforementioned factors are just a few reasons why the country is one of the go-to options for students from across the globe for university education.

Not to mention that the USA’s colleges also offer flexibility in course selection with career guidance programmes besides the attractive employment opportunities the country offers. For the foreseeable future, the US is likely to remain a popular destination for students looking to live the American Dream.

Three Indian-American Democrats have taken oath as Fort Bend County Judges in the United States.

In a ceremony on Sunday, Juli A Mathew, KP George, and Surendran K Pattel were sworn in as Fort Bend County judges, along with other newly elected and re-elected officials.

Juli A Mathew, the first Indian-American woman to be elected to a judge’s bench in the US four years ago, was re-elected for a second term after defeating her Republican challenger Andrew Dornburg.

Mathew, a native of Thiruvalla in Kerala, was sworn in via videoconferencing and will continue to serve as presiding judge for a period of four years.

She was voted the Administrative Judge for the County Courts by her peers and also heads the first Juvenile Intervention and Mental Health Court.

In a Facebook post after winning the election, she wrote, “Thank you! I am truly grateful to have been selected to serve the citizens of Fort Bend County for one more term. I’m grateful for every supporter, prayer warrior, and voter during this journey.” George, the first Indian-American to hold an office in Fort Bend County, won a second term as the county’s judge in a narrow race in the November elections. He hails from Kerala’s Kakkodu city.

George, a 57-year-old Democrat, whose win in 2018 made him a trailblazer in the Houston area and beyond, said he hopes it stays that way now that he’s been granted another four years as the chief executive for one of the most diverse and fastest-growing counties in the country.

He said that community engagement will be the top priority for his administration.

The county also welcomed District Court Judge Pattel, who edged Republican Edward M. Krenek in the race for the 240th Judicial District in November.

The 52-year-old, a native of Kerala, with an experience of over 25 years has been a Texas attorney since 2009, prior to which he was a lawyer in India, where he earned his law Degree in 1995 from the University of Calicut.

According to his website, in 2015, Pattel was elected as the president of the Malayalee Association of Greater Houston, a 2,500-member nonprofit organisation that serves more than 12,000 Indian families.
