24-year-old Ashwin Ramaswami, a first-generation Indian-American Democrat, has officially launched his campaign for a Senate seat in the US state of Georgia, making history as the first Gen Z Indian-American to pursue a state or federal legislative position in the United States.
In a two-minute campaign video, Ramaswami, the son of Tamil parents with expertise in software engineering, election security, and technology law, highlighted his unique background and called out his opponent, incumbent state senator Shawn Still, for being an “election denier” and a “typical Georgia politician”. Still was among those indicted along with former US president Donald Trump for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state.
Ramaswami, who was born and raised in Johns Creek, Georgia, emphasized his commitment to expanding Medicaid, passing “common-sense” gun safety measures, and protecting reproductive healthcare. He also expressed his determination to work towards building a better future for Georgia, stating, “I’m the son of immigrants. I’m an engineer. I’m Gen Z. And I was born and raised right here in Johns Creek. And I’m ready to get to work building the Georgia that could be the one just over the horizon.”
The young politician, who graduated with a degree in Computer Science from Stanford and is currently attending Georgetown University Law Center, has been vocal about his desire to give back to his community. “For a long time, I was interested in how I could give back to my community. I didn’t want to stay in the Bay. I wanted to come and give back,” Ramaswami told The Stanford Daily in a recent interview.
Ramaswami’s announcement has garnered attention as he aims to bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the political landscape in Georgia. As the race for the Senate seat heats up, all eyes will be on the young candidate as he seeks to make a significant impact in the upcoming election.
