The US Senate confirmed Dr Geeta Rao Gupta, an Indian-American, for the position of Ambassador-at-Large for the Office of Global Women’s Issues in the State Department.

“Dr Geeta Rao Gupta was confirmed by the US Senate as the Ambassador-at-Large for the Office of Global Women’s Issues. @StateDept looks forward to her efforts to promote women and girls’ rights through US foreign policy,” tweeted The Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues.

President Joe Biden nominated Gupta for this role, and she received confirmation with a vote of 51 to 47 earlier this week.

Gupta is known internationally as a leader in promoting gender equality and women’s economic security and US State Department welcomed her appointment.

The State Department tweeted Friday it “looks forward to her efforts to promote women and girls’ rights through US foreign policy.”

Gupta worked closely with various United Nations (UN) agencies and programs. She worked as the Executive Director of the UN Foundation’s 3D Programme for Girls and Women.

She also advises the UNAIDS Global Coalition on Women and AIDS and is on the boards of InterAction and the Moriah Fund.

She also held the position of co-chair of the UN Millennium Project Task Force on Education and Gender Equality.

Peter Yeo, Senior Vice President for the UN Foundation, said Gupta’s appointment underscores US commitment to gender equity at a time when women’s basic human rights and welfare are at risk around the world.

“Dr Gupta is a deeply admired leader with extensive experience in the priority areas of the Office of Global Women’s issues, said Michelle Milford Morse, Vice President of the UN Foundation’s Girls and Women Strategy. This is a critical role for US global leadership, and Dr Gupta will fulfil it with great distinction,” he said.

Gupta’s expertise in gender and development spans several decades. She has served on an oversight committee for the World Health Organisation’s Health Emergencies Programme and co-chaired the World Bank’s Global Gender-based Violence Task Force.

Furthermore, Gupta has held the position of President at the International Center for Research on Women and has received numerous awards, including the 2006 Anne Roe Award from Harvard University and the 2007 “Women Who Mean Business” Award from the Washington Business Journal.

Dr Gupta’s educational background includes a PhD in Social Psychology from Bangalore University in India, as well as an MPhil and MA from the University of Delhi. Her wealth of experience and accolades make her an excellent choice for this important role in advancing women’s rights globally.

Biden to host India’s Modi at White House next month

Biden to host India’s Modi at White House next month

US President Joe Biden will host Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, DC next month, the White House has announced, in a trip the Biden administration said aims to “affirm the deep and close partnership” between the two countries.

In a statement on Wednesday, the White House said Modi will make an official state visit to the United States capital on June 22, including a state dinner.

“The upcoming visit will affirm the deep and close partnership between the United States and India and the warm bonds of family and friendship that link Americans and Indians together,” the statement read.

The US and India have maintained close ties for decades, notably on defence and trade, and this will be the first state visit by Modi to the country.

But ties between the two nations have been tested in recent months over a range of issues, including concern over the Indian government’s human rights record and its relationship with Russia amid the war in Ukraine.

Biden and Modi held a virtual meeting in April 2022 as Washington sought to push New Delhi to apply economic pressure on Moscow over the invasion of its neighbour.

The American president told the Indian prime minister at that time that the US could help India diversify its oil imports – but that it was not in the country’s interests to increase energy imports from Russia, a White House spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, an independent US commission recommended for the fourth year in a row that India be added to a religious freedom blacklist, saying that conditions in the country for religious minorities “continued to worsen” throughout 2022.

These US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) reports have drawn anger from Indian officials. Last year, India’s foreign ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi accused senior US officials of making “ill-informed” and “biased” comments.

Nevertheless, Modi’s invitation to Washington, DC comes as both India and the US seek to shore up support against China’s growing assertiveness.

In its statement on Wednesday, the White House said the upcoming talks between Biden and Modi also will strengthen their respective countries’ “shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific”.

“The leaders will discuss ways to further expand our educational exchanges and people-to-people ties, as well as our work together to confront common challenges from climate change, to workforce development and health security,” the Biden administration said.

Modi visited Biden at the White House in 2021, but as part of a summit for the so-called “Quad” grouping – the US, Australia, Japan and India – that is seeking to counter China’s rising influence in the Pacific region.

The relationship between Washington and Beijing has seen growing tensions in the past few years as the US prioritised strategic competition with China in its foreign policy under former President Donald Trump, a position fully embraced by Biden.

One of the most well-liked Indian-American actors in Hollywood is Mindy Kaling. Kaling has spent more than a decade advocating for the Indian community in the Hollywood industry, from developing the popular Netflix series “Never Have I Ever” to acting in the enduring American comedy series “The Office.”

It is believed that the actor-trip producer to Rajasthan may also be professional in nature as she may be scouting locations for her upcoming wedding film with Priyanka Chopra Jonas, which was announced in 2019.

The actor-producer is currently exploring the city of Jaipur, its culture, and its cuisine. Dan Goor, who wrote the unnamed rom-com movie, travelled with Kaling as well. Taking to Instagram on Sunday, Kaling shared a series of images of herself in Jaipur. “The Pink City,” she wrote in the caption of her post. The actor-producer sported a red and white sundress and seemed gleeful in all her pictures. One of the snaps even showed Goor sitting right next to her.

Many online users responded quickly to Kaling’s stay in Jaipur. Others inquired as to if she was in the city looking for sites for the rom-com with Chopra, while others simply dropped heart emojis.

Actor Poorna Jagannathan wrote, “Pretty in Pink”. Director Nisha Ganatra commented, “I love that fort so much! It’s beautiful!”

Notably, it was disclosed last year that Kaling and Chopra will reportedly portray relatives in the much-awaited movie. Chopra described the movie as a “buddy comedy” about two pals in an interview from last year. She mentioned that a lavish Indian wedding occurs at the film’s conclusion.
