Indian-Americans, who on Saturday participated in the historic LGBTQ Pride rally at the White House, urged community members to love and support their child irrespective of their sexual orientation.

President Joe Biden welcomed hundreds to the White House on Saturday for a delayed Pride Month celebration aimed at showing LGBTQ+ people that his administration has their back at a time when advocates are warning of a spike in discriminatory legislation, particularly aimed at the transgender community, sweeping through statehouses.

The event, which the administration described as the largest Pride event hosted at the White House, was initially scheduled for Thursday, but was postponed because of poor air quality from hazardous air flowing in from Canadian wildfires.

“I’m the parent of a trans child myself. I’m here celebrating pride at the White House, and I’m gonna let all the Desi families around the globe know that to love your child and to support your child is exactly what we are all meant to do. I hope that all of you can find the support you need to do that,” Aruna Rao, executive director of Desi Rainbow told PTI on the South Lawns of the White House.

Only a handful of Indian-Americans participated in the rally.

“One of the things we should understand is a lot of these folks in our community cannot be out. They have to remain in the closet, due to social pressures, cultural pressures, economic pressures. The reason there’s a handful of that, not because there are only a handful that exist, it’s because they cannot be in this space,” she said.

“One of the biggest challenges that our community’s facing because what happens with people who are not supported is essentially there are a huge number of risks that we subject to, including mental health risks. LGBTQ kids have one of the highest rates of suicide across the world, highest rates of homelessness here in South Asia, everywhere. These are the issues that are very urgent and doing this work and supporting LGBTQ folks and their families can save lives,” Rao said.

President Biden, she said, has been one of the most supportive American Presidents in terms of LGBTQ rights, and advancing LGBTQ equality.

“He’s the first president in my lifetime that I have seen otter the words transgender Americans at his inauguration. It absolutely made me so happy. He recognizes not just gay, lesbian, bisexual folks, he recognises the transgender community. That is really important to me, because that is the most marginalized within the LGBTQ group,” she said.

“He has been instrumental in codifying the respect for Marriage Act back in December. That essentially legislatively makes sure that gay marriage, LGBTQ marriage, is not going to be at risk again due to Supreme Court actions. We are really hoping that he and the Senate and the Congress can come together to pass the Equality Act, which will actually bring true equality to LGBTQ folks in this country,” Rao said.

Chennai-born Lesley Kingston said he support, South Asians, specifically Indians, who are living here and abroad in securing their rights for equality.

Responding to a question, Kingston, who is an artist by profession, said the LGBTQ community is facing discrimination in India.

“The biggest challenges that we have is really colonization. Because a lot of our cultural beliefs comes from the oppression that colonization has brought us. We have not gone past that. We have used the laws that the, the British brought to our country and are using it to oppress our people, which is really unfortunate,” he said.

“It’s 2023, and we all, including Americans need to get past it and realize that we share the same blood. We’re made up of the same things. We’re all human beings and we’re all deserving of equality. So I think the biggest challenge that we have is for us to recognize that we are colonized people and we have colonized minds, and we need to get past that,” Kingston said.pt

Indian Americans are eagerly waiting to extend a warm welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first state visit to the US during June 21-24.

Thousands of expatriates will gather in Washington to welcome PM Modi, who will arrive in the US at the invitation of President Joe Biden and first Lady Jill Biden.

While a group of Indian Americans are planning to go to Andrews Air Force Base when the PM’s Air India One will land from New York, over 600 community members are planning to gather at the Freedom Plaza in front of the Willard Intercontinental in Washington near the White House, where the PM will be staying during his visit.

At the Freedom Plaza, the community has planned to showcase the cultural fabric of India through cultural events representing India from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, and from West to East, Adapa Prasad, President of Overseas Friends of BJP-USA, told ANI.

“It is India’s diverse cultural show and growth story. We have roughly 25 programs representing Kashmir to Kerala and Maharashtra to the northeast with 160 artists participating,” Mr Prasad said.

PM Modi will also become the first Indian Prime Minister to address a Joint Meeting of the US Congress for the second time. Indian Americans said the invitation sent to him to address the US Congress serves as a reminder of the historic significance of the relationship between the US and India, reflecting on the shared dream and commitment to global peace and prosperity, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.

“I think it is crucial for us to understand the kind of the importance of Modi ji speaking on the stage. A lot of global leaders have spoken separately in the Union House of Representatives. They have spoken at state dinners and all of that. But somebody addressing the state of the joint session is something very, very unusual. So, that tells how geopolitics has come around, that tells how much Modi ji has made an influence in the entire geopolitical world,” Srilkeha Reddy Palle, a resident of Virginia, told ANI.

It’s not just PM Modi’s appeal among the Indian expatriates that is “unique” that connects with them, some are also excited to express gratitude to him for the recent developments in India.

Mohan Sapru, a member of the Kashmiri Hindu community, in Washington, said, “I just want to express our gratitude to the Prime Minister for the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A in Kashmir. And I’m sure together we will be working together with Modi ji for resolving all the issues with regard Kashmiri Hindus’ resettlement safely back in Kashmir.”

In the US, PM Modi will also address the chairman and CEOs of top US companies at John F Kennedy Centre in Washington, followed by an address to the Indian expatriates at Ronald Reagan Center in DC in the evening.

Several top Indian-Americans have expressed their excitement to join PM Modi on the North Lawns of the UN complex in New York, on June 21, where he will lead the International Yoga Day event soon after arriving in the country.

“The Indian American community feels that they are part of this historic story. They’re proud that this momentous occasion is happening, that too when India became the fifth largest economy and the third largest, so the community itself is very proud about their country of origin,” Mr Prasad further noted.

On June 22, more than 7,000 Indian Americans are planning to be on the South Lawns of the White House when President Biden and the First Lady would welcome the Prime Minister with a 21-gun salute. The White House will be closing the registration shortly for those attending the welcome ceremony.

“India was known as an underdeveloped country. All that has changed in the last 10 years. Thanks a lot to Shri Modi ji who has transformed India not only with the IT generation but by rising high above all the expectations of people in terms of infrastructure development, in terms of financial independence given to all the markets,” said Premkumar Swaminathan, who is from Tamil Nadu.

President Joe Biden and the White House celebrated Pride Month this weekend. Soon after the celebrations, Mr Biden’s administration received a massive backlash over its decision to flay a rainbow-coloured Pride flag at the White House. Many Twitter users said that it violates the US Flag Code.

On Saturday, the US President shared a post about the LGBTQ community, showcasing a set of flags on the White House facing the South Lawn.

The display included a rainbow-coloured Pride flag alongside two American flags.

The critics slammed the Biden administration and said that the arrangement goes against a section of the US Flag Code. The users pointed out that the American flag should be in the centre of any display featuring multiple national flags or pennants.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton tweeted”To advance revolutionary transgender agenda targeting children, Biden violates a basic tenet of US Flag Code and disrespects every American service member buried under its colours.”

Mr Fitton went on to cite a US Flag Code, “The flag of the United States of America should be at the centre and at the highest point of the group when a number of flags of States or localities or pennants of societies are grouped and displayed from staffs.”

One Twitter user who goes by the name of The Godfather wrote: “This is NOT the Biden White House! It’s The Peoples White House. Please don’t desecrate it by displaying a gay pride flag flanked by Old Glory! It’s also a violation of the US Flag Code. Disgraceful! Disrespectful! Diabolic!”

Dr Roger Marshall, senator for Kansas, tweeted, “This is a disgrace. Not only is it in breach of the US Flag Code, but it’s a glaring example of this White House’s incompetence and insistence on putting their social agenda ahead of patriotism.”

Defenders of the flag hit back at the accusers. A user wrote, “While it cannot be seen in this photo, the American flag is being flown on top of the White House in the centre of the building, and therefore, the flag code is not being violated.”
