A three-language romantic video song by renowned Indian-American singer Vidya Vox on weddings in Kerala has garnered over a million views on YouTube, highlighting the State’s appeal as an ideal destination for weddings and honeymooners. The three-and-a-half-minute Shubha Mangalyam… video songs, featuring lyrics in English, Hindi and Malayalam, portrays a non-Malayali couple celebrating their wedding in Kerala and enjoying the picturesque charm of the State.

Vidya completed this lilting music track — a unique mash-up of Western pop with Indian classical — in collaboration with Kerala Tourism this mid-summer. The song has garnered positive responses from viewers, effectively earning a global appeal about ‘God’s Own Country’ as a desirable wedding destination.

Shot across south-central Kerala’s scenic landscapes of Alappuzha backwaters, Wagamon hills and Marari beach, Shubha Mangalyam… has achieved over 10 lakh views on YouTube in just two months, thanks also to its catchy melody and spectacular visuals. Comments show the viewers’ admiration for Kerala’s natural beauty as well as its suitability as a wedding destination.

Shubha Mangalyam…, which has garnered popularity across other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, continues to trend. It also serves as a tool that promotes the charm of Kerala across the globe.

The video comes just eight months after Travel + Leisure India & South Asia magazine declared Kerala as the best wedding destination. The choice was on the basis of a poll by the magazine’s readers from various tourist destinations of India. Last year, Kerala Tourism organised a publicity campaign at airports and on social media platforms to promote the State as an ideal tourism destination. The campaigns have buttressed the trend of choosing the State as a preferred wedding destination.

Arjun Nimmala, 17, became the first Indian American teen and second Indian American ever to make it into the Major League Baseball draft after being picked by the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.

About Nimmala: Nimmala, who originally played cricket, is a shortstop from Strawberry Crest High School in Dover, Florida. Standing 6-foot-1, he describes himself as a “patient-aggressive” hitter. He ranked 11th on prospect rankings. In Sunday night’s first round, the Blue Jays selected Nimmala as 20th overall.

Why this matters: No Indian American has ever played in the majors. While Nimmala is the first teen to be drafted from the Indian American community, Kumar Rocker was the first player to do so back in 2021 at the age of 21 by the New York Mets and again in 2022 by the Texas Rangers.

The 20th pick comes with an approximate slot value of $3.75 million. Shane Farell, the Blue Jays’ director of amateur scouting, described Nimmala as “an overall tool package, combined with the age and overall upside of the player.”

What’s next: Nimmala is set to attend Florida State University this fall, but the Blue Jays nonetheless expect to sign him. If all goes according to plan, Nimmala will kick off his new journey with a two-week orientation at the team’s minor-league complex in Dunedin, which sits just about an hour away from his home.

Anurag Jain has loved cricket his entire life, but after learning how much players made he ditched his dream of making a career of it and ultimately went into business.

These days he’s the managing partner of Perot Jain, a venture capital firm he co-founded with Texas billionaire Ross Perot Jr. If things go to plan, Jain could have a far greater impact on the game than he ever could with a bat and ball.

Jain is part-owner with Perot of the Texas Super Kings, a team created this year based in Dallas. On Thursday evening, Jain’s team, which is also backed by India’s Chennai Super Kings, will host the Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket’s first game in the US.

Jain is part of a group including influential Indian-born business people bringing the world’s second-most popular game to US audiences. Major League Cricket has also attracted Adobe Inc. CEO Shantanu Narayen and Microsoft Corp.’s Satya Nadella, who has a piece of Seattle’s professional team, the Orcas. Bollywood’s most famous actor Shah Rukh Khan, meanwhile, is investing in a cricket stadium near Los Angeles for the league.

“My vested interest was to bring cricket right into the heart of America,” Jain said in an interview. “I see a lot of cricket being played one off, club level, league level, at the local levels. But not at the professional level and that’s what I really wanted to change.”

The sport has been steadily growing in popularity in the US for years, especially in places with large South Asian populations, including Houston, New York and Los Angeles. The Dallas-Fort Worth area itself has more than 220,000 Indian-Americans.

Like baseball, cricket is a bat-and-ball sport characterized by long games, arcane terminology and a near-mystical reverence for playing statistics by hardcore followers. The version being pitched to American sports fan will be a shorter format that typically lasts three to four hours and has underpinned various cricket leagues around the world in recent years.

It originated in England, but is widely played and watched in Commonwealth countries such as India, South Africa and Australia, and trails just soccer in global popularity. The Indian Premier League, launched in 2008, has become the commercial heartbeat of the sport, attracting the broadest audiences, the biggest stars and the most money. Bloomberg reported in May that Tiger Global Management is in advanced talks to buy a stake in India’s Rajasthan Royals for $40 million, valuing the team at $650 million.

Investors have already said they’ll pour $120 million into the nascent US cricket league, wagering that by luring international superstars the sport can draw live audiences in the US and tap into a global fan base.

The Texas Super Kings are playing in the Dallas suburb of Grand Prairie at the former home of the Texas AirHogs, a minor league baseball team. The venue, which has 6,000 seats, is a 10-minute drive from the Dallas Cowboys 80,000-person stadium in Arlington.

Jain said he found the stadium through his business partner Perot, a former owner of basketball team the Dallas Mavericks.

Jain grew up in Chennai, India, and says at one point he was the fastest bowler in his city and had ambitions of playing professionally, until he discovered the economics of the sport.

“Cricketers in those days made like $1.50 per game and they had probably 20 match days a year. So that wasn’t enough money and my dad sat me down and said, ‘look son your cricketer days are done, you need to go back and become an engineer,’” he said.

Jain studied at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and later got his MBA at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at University of Michigan. After moving to the US he founded a company that he sold to Ross Perot in 2003. Perot and Jain set up their venture firm in 2014.

Thursday’s game will be broadcast live, a reprieve for those who don’t want to stand out in the Texas summer heat with temperatures forecast that day at more than 100F (38C). There will also be typical ballpark food in addition to South Asian cuisine including samosas.

While most of the games in the two-week season will be in Dallas, a handful will be played in Morrisville, North Carolina. India’s Viacom18 is broadcasting the games, which will end on July 30. A second league hasn’t been scheduled yet, but if the league works the goal is to lengthen the season to a more typical eight to ten weeks.

Players have come from around the world to participate.

Cody Chetty of the Texas Super Kings, took a gamble when he signed a contract with Major League Cricket in 2020 and moved to California with his wife from South Africa.

He’d been playing professionally in South Africa for 11 years but was excited about the opportunity in the US. Since his move to Southern California, Chetty has been teaching cricket to young people and working as a real estate agent while waiting for the league to start. Chetty has been surprised by the level of interest from people in LA and sees it as his long-term home.

“We were looking at the cricket side of it but also life after cricket,” said Chetty, on his move to the US.

Similarly, captain Sunil Narine and all-rounder Andre Russell are going to be the backbone for the Knight Riders. The batting trio of Jason Roy, Martin Guptill and Rilee Rossouw is enough to bring chills to any bowling lineup in the world. Spinner Adam Zampa and pacer Lockie Ferguson will carry the responsibility of taking key wickets with the ball.

Grand Prairie Stadium Pitch Report For MLC 2023 Matches In Dallas
This is the very first match at this brand-new Grand Prairie Stadium. This used to be a ballpark but underwent construction last year. The surface at this venue will be a fresh one and the batters are expected to thrive just like any other normal T20 track.

There will be a good amount of bounce available and the ball will come nicely onto the bat. This ground is specifically built for tournaments like this and run-scoring should be in focus here. The pacers can make use of the new hard ball on an unused pitch.

The boundaries are said to be on the shorter side which will further help the batters in smashing a lot of boundaries here. With a fresh outfield, the batters will get full rewards for stroke-making. Chasing is the preferred thing to do in white-ball formats and both captains might do the same in this game as well. That being said, anything above 180 runs in the first innings should be a good innings total.
