The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SGCCI) organized its first Global Textile Trade Fair (GTTF) in the US to promote world’s second largest manmade fibre (MMF) manufacturing hub based at Surat, Gujarat, India.

Surat is India’s largest MMF textile hub producing nearly 60 percent of all India MMF textile production. India ranks second after China in manufacturing articles, apparel and other home furnishing items.

The three day GTTF exhibition 2022 was held at Gas South Convention Center, Duluth, Georgia from June 9 to 11, according to a media release. The exhibition is supported by India’s Ministry of Textiles.

It was inaugurated by Sebastian Barron, field representative from the office of the Georgia governor. He extended support to SGCCI for holding such exhibitions in Georgia.

Dr. Swati Kulkarni, consul general of India at Atlanta Sushmita Das, joint director with Indian Chamber of Commerce, USA, Devender Singh, passport officer with Indian consulate at Atlanta, and Vasu Patel, president of Federation of Gujarati Associations of USA, were among those who attended,

Hundreds of business visitors came on the first day and many placed large orders with over 50 Surat based textile manufacturers exhibiting their goods, the release said.

Dr. Vijay G. Prabhakar, founder chair of US Congressman Danny K Davis’ Multi Ethnic Advisory Task Force, presented a Congressional commendation to SGCCI president Ashish D Gujarati for the historic initiative of bringing Indian apparel and home textiles expo to the US.

Overwhelmed with the response of US buyers, Gujarati noted that the US imports nearly $112 billion worth of apparel, clothing and home textiles annually, 58% of which is MMF textiles.

At present China is the largest supplier to USA in apparel and home textile category. Since Indian manufacturers have not explored the US market so far, the supply from India’s textile industry is very limited.

Surat textile industry has recently upgraded their textile manufacturing technology and is now among the world’s best. Its products will surely find relevance in the US market, he said.

Gujarati invited home textile retailers, apparel and clothing retailers, kids wear brand owners to visit the exhibition to give a big boost to India-US bilateral trade.

Donna Willett, marketing manager of direct resource group expressed interest in visiting textile manufacturing units in Surat.

GTTF will hold a second stop in at Regal Albert Palace, Fords, New Jersey on June 16 10 am to 6 pm followed by a third stop at Santhom Hall, Norwalk, Los Angles, on June 19 from 10 am to 6 pm.

Ajit Pant, president, US India chamber of Commerce, Midwest encouraged all to attend and support the first ever exhibition of Indian textile and garment manufacturers.

Mustaf Ajmeri, chairman Global Entertainment and Media Services, Atlanta, congratulated SGCCI and Octavia Exposium LLP on the success of the exhibition and looked forward to further collaboration in North America.
