Another step forward…Go USA Cricket!

TCA Camp kids meeting Robin Singh

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The USA cricket team came up short in their opening match of the ICC World Cup Qualifier, falling to West Indies by 39 runs. The loss was a disappointing result, but it is not the end of the world for the USA team! This is a young team that is still learning, and they will benefit from the experience of playing against top-quality opposition!

Gajanand Singh led the way for the USA with a century, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a strong West Indies batting performance. Johnson Charles and Shai Hope both scored half-centuries, and Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder chipped in with valuable contributions.

The USA bowlers did a good job of keeping West Indies in check for most of the innings, but they were eventually undone by some late hitting! The fireworks kept on raining as the west indians hit sixes on sixes!

Despite the loss, there were some positives for the USA team to take away. Gajanand Singh’s century was a sign of his growing maturity as a batsman, as he will be a key player for the USA in the rest of the tournament. USA had some responsible innings from their batting which got them very close to victory. Gajanand Singh scored an unbeaten 101, his first in One Day Internationals as the USA! USA, needing 298 for victory, closed on 258-7.

Singh, whose ton came from 109 deliveries and Nosthush Kenjige, who scored a quick-fire 34 not out from 32 balls, shared an unbroken 76-run eighth-wicket partnership that for a while, made things uncomfortable for the West Indies.

Shayan Jahangir contributed 39 and Aaron Jones 23, but the USA were unable to get on top of the West Indies bowling.

“I did it for my father,” Gajanand told ESPNcricinfo afterwards. “I was very emotional because he passed away when I made my ODI debut two years ago. It meant a lot to me.”

The USA bowlers also showed some promise, and they will be hoping to build on their performance in the next match. Pick of the bowlers were Saurabh Netravalkar(3 wickets), Kyle Phillips(3 wickets), and Steven Taylor(3 wickets). Our very own Dallas Left-arm spinner Noshtush Kenjige took 1 wicket in an economical spell of 10 overs and 44 runs!

The loss to the West Indies was not the expected result for America. However, they lost a very close game that went to the last 5 overs of the match. This is a young team that is still learning, and they will benefit from the experience of playing against top-quality opposition.

The US team will have a chance to bounce back in their next match, which is against Nepal on Tuesday. If they can win that match in good fashion, they will be well on their way to qualifying for the World Cup. Qualifying for the World Cup would be in every American’s mind, so the USA Cricket team will be playing their hearts out going forward!

The USA cricket team will need to learn from their mistakes if they want to qualify. They will need to improve their batting and bowling, and they will need to find a way to close out matches. But if they can do that, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come!
